Report

On 24 August 2023, the Center for Strategic Studies and Simulation (CS3) at the United Service Institution (USI) of India organised a discussion between a delegation from the National Defense University (NDU) of Taiwan and the USI. Major General BK Sharma, AVSM, SM and Bar (Retd), Director General of USI, gave introductory remarks and delved into the opportunities and benefits of mutual cooperation between India and Taiwan. The Indian perspective on Taiwan was discussed by the Indian side. This was followed by remarks from Admiral Liu Ching-Pin, President of NDU. Both sides discussed the prevention and implications of a crisis in the Taiwan Strait.

Discussion between NDU and USI

Key takeaways

Indian Perspective

It has been discussed that the crisis in the Taiwan Strait would have direct implications for India, as it would hamper India’s trade and other national interests. Additionally, India’s IT and cyber sector would also be negatively impacted, because submarine cables transit through the Taiwan Strait. Therefore, India needs to react in the event of a Taiwan Strait crisis. However, the reaction would depend on various circumstances. Meanwhile, India aims to engage with the Global South, including Pacific Island states, Africa, and Southeast Asia, to explain to them that the Taiwan Crisis would directly impact all of the Global South and build diplomatic pressure against any misadventure.

Indian Delegation

Taiwanese Perspective- The Taiwanese delegation highlighted their policy of actively avoiding conflict and refraining from provoking war in their region. They emphasized that Taiwan remains committed to bolstering its defense through asymmetric capabilities. Therefore, in addition to increasing its defense spending, Taiwan has initiated special projects aimed at enhancing its asymmetric capabilities.
