The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Headquarter of the Foundation is located at 511, B Block, Naurang House, 2l Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi - 110001, and it has a global spread with its presence in the USA, Latin America Russia South Africa, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Norway, UK andAustralia.Gandhi Mandela Foundation has instituted a Chair of Excellence (COE) in the year 2024 at USI.
