The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Assam Rifles Chair of Excellence


Assam Rifles is the oldest Para Military force in India. It has a unique distinction of having vast experience in various forms of operations in areas ranging from J&K, Sikkim and the entire Northeast. Keeping pace with the changing paradigm the force is transforming itself to meet the futuristic challenges. Lt Gen Sukhdeep Sangwan, PVSM, AVSM, SM**, the then Director General, Assam Rifles therefore instituted the Assam Rifles Chair of Excellence in the year 2020.  The first Chair was allotted to Shri Jitesh Khosla, IAS (Retd), former Chief Secretary, Assam, and he is researching on the topic “Comprehensive Development of North East: Window to India’s Act East Policy”.

Lt Gen Sukhdeep Sangwan, PVSM, AVSM, SM**, the then Director General, Assam Rifles therefore instituted the Assam Rifles Chair of Excellence in the year 2020.

Lieutenant General Pradeep Chandran Nair, PVSM,  AVSM,YSM, PhD(Retd),

Lieutenant General Pradeep Chandran Nair, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, PhD (Retd) was commissioned into the 18th Battalion the SIKH Regiment on 14 Dec 1985, He is an alumni of DSSC, Wellington, CDM, Secunderabad and Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi.  He has served extensively in the North East.. He commanded a Brigade in Manipur, and was later the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) in Nagaland. He has tenanted instructional appointments at the Infantry School Mhow, Headquarters Indian Military Training Team, Bhutan, and has been a Directing Staff at the DSSC, Wellington. He has been a BGS in an Area HQ in Mumbai.. He was the Director General Recruiting at Army Headquarters prior to taking over as Director General Assam Rifles at Shillong on 01 Jun 2021.
