The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Colonel Pyara Lal Memorial Library (Information Resource Centre) at the United Service Institution (USI) of India is a cornerstone of knowledge in the fields of Defence Studies, Strategic Perspectives, Warfare, Conflict and Peace Studies, Diplomacy,  and  International Relations. Serving as a  repository  of  both historical and contemporary insights, the library supports education, research, training, and lifelong learning with its diverse resources and serene ambiance.

           o Topics ranging from United Nations affairs, insurgency, terrorism, to historical studies and biographies.

           o Over 72,000 books, including rare manuscripts and resources dating back to 1616.
           o Access to 71 journals from around the globe and  05 newspapers.

           o Reference materials on pivotal wars (1962, 1965, 1971, Kargil - 1999), medals, and military uniforms.
           o A comprehensive Indian Army List (1890-1993, excluding 1960-1969).

           o Rare Section: Housing texts as old as four centuries.
           o New Arrivals & Magazines: Ensures patrons stay updated with the latest in defence and strategy.
           o Reading Room: Features USI publications and archival documents like General Orders and Gazetteers.

           o Centrally located on the ground floor of the USI premises in New Delhi.
           o Fully air-conditioned environment conducive to study and research.

The library has computerised its activities, processes, products and services for the benefit of users to facilitate fast access to the information held in the library and to promote library use, and increasing availability of library resources to its members.

Working Hours

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday – 1000 hrs to 1600 hrs
(Lunch Break 1300 hrs to 1345 hrs)

Saturday – 1000 hrs to 1400 hrs Library remains closed on Sundays and gazetted holidays.
