The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Message from the Director, Centre for Emerging Technologies for Atma Nirbhar Bharat (CETANB)

Dear Members,
Emerging Technologies like Generative AI, biotechnology, additive manufacturing, and quantum computing are set to change business processes and the strategic landscape alike. Technology  sovereignty  and  Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)  are critical areas which have immense significance on national and  International  security. Technology  is  tripping   doctrinal  precepts.  A  robust  defence-industrial  base  which   makes  India  self-reliant  is  the  only way  security  can be  guaranteed.  Atma Nirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India)  is thus identified as a  transforming initiative  to propel India  into its decisive decade.

At CETANB, our mission is to work at the intersection of Geopolitics and Emerging Technologies, and India's domestic defence and security sector, particularly  MSMEs,  and the Armed Forces—the Army, Navy, and Air Force.  We aim to transform the vision of self-reliance into reality by fostering a culture of trust, partnership, and growth.  Our initiative is built on the  foundation of ethical collaboration, ensuring confidentiality and integrity in all our engagements.

We are also  dedicated to  addressing  the unique  challenges faced  by our defence and  security sector.  By  identifying requirements, understanding domestic  capabilities, and  providing   strategic  guidance,  we  empower  stakeholders  to  navigate  the  complexities  of  defence  procurement  and innovation. Our  approach  emphasises  purposeful  dialogue,  streamlined  decision-making,  and a  commitment to  enhancing India's self-reliance in defence.

Through one-on-one consultations, roundtables with policymakers, and collaborations with Ministries, International organisations, and industry experts, we strive to create a robust ecosystem that encourages  innovation and  efficiency.  We also  work closely  with  the  National Security Council  (Prime Minister’s Office),various ministries and agencies (including DRDO),  to explore  opportunities  to ensure that our defence capabilities are both modern and sustainable.

As we stride forward as a nation, we invite policymakers, industry partners and academic institutions to join the USI-CETANB in this journey towards a stronger,  self- reliant India. Together, we can build a  future where  our defence and  security sector thrives,  ensuring the safety  and security of our nation.

Warm regards
