The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Admiral RD Katari Chair of Excellence


Admiral RD Katari was an Indian Navy Admiral who served as the 3rd Chief of the Naval Staff.  He was the first Indian to hold the office and succeeded as the last British officer to the post, Vice Admiral Sir Stephen Hope Carlill.  In the year 1995 the Naval Headquarters decided to establish a Chair in the name of Admiral RD Katari and the Chair commenced in the year 1997.  The first Chair was allotted to Vice Adm RB Suri, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd), who researched on the topic “Shape and Size of the Indian Navy in the Early 21st Century”.

Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla, PVSM, AVSM, NM, VSM (Retd)

Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla joined the National Defence Academy in Jan 1978 and was commissioned in the Indian Navy on 01 Jan 1982. He was Defence Attaché to Jakarta. He has commanded five warships, including the aircraft carrier, INS Viraat and the Indian Navy's Western Fleet. He has participated in Op Pawan in Sri Lanka in 1989 while on board INS Arnala and was commended for gallantry. He was awarded the Nausena Medal in 2003 while in command of INS Kora during Operation Parakram. He was conferred the VSM on 26 Jan 13 and the AVSM on 26 Jan 2015.
