The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Project Udbhav

'Project Udbhav':  Illuminating India's Military Future with Ancient Strategic Wisdom. In keeping with the Govt of India's vision for developing an Indigenous Strategic Military Culture, the USI-CMHCS initiated a project ‘Udbhav’, to study the evolution of Indigenous Military Systems and strategic thought; and to develop an indigenous vocabulary rooted in India's philosophy and culture. ‘Project Udbhav’ was formally launched by Shri Rajnath Singh, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri  at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi on 21 Oct 2023, during the Indian Military Heritage Festival was organised by the USI, in the presence of General Manoj Pande, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, Chief of the Army Staff. Following activities have been undertaken in the year 2023-24

An Exhibition on ‘Historical Patterns of Indian Strategic Culture ‘was also inaugurated by Honorable RRM, Shri Ajay Bhatt at Ajanta Gallery, National Museum , Janpath. The Exhibition is open for General Public from 21 May – 31 May 24.
