Artificial Intelligence in Military Operations: A Raging Debate and Way Forward for the Indian Armed Forces

About the Monograph

This monograph provides a comprehensive and deeply analytical examination of the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern warfare and its profound implications for India’s national security. The first part dissects the global debate surrounding Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS), presenting competing ethical, legal, and operational arguments with clarity and balance. It explains how autonomy, human control, international humanitarian law, and technological unpredictability intersect in ways that challenge traditional notions of accountability and the conduct of war. The second part turns to India’s strategic environment, evaluating the nation’s current preparedness, technological gaps, and institutional limitations. It outlines a practical roadmap for accelerating AI adoption in the armed forces—strengthening R&D, incentivising industry, reforming structures, and fostering civil–military–academic collaboration. Blending technical insight with strategic foresight, the monograph serves as an essential guide for policymakers and military leaders preparing India for the next revolution in military affairs.
