The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Lt Gen PS Bhagat Chair of Excellence


Lt Gen Premindra Singh Bhagat was a legendary officer in the Indian Army and the first Indian recipient of the Victoria Cross during World War II for exceptional bravery in clearing minefields under fire in North Africa. A pioneer in engineering and strategy, he later served as the Commandant of the Indian Military Academy, shaping future leaders. Known for his discipline, innovation, and valor, General Bhagat remains an iconic figure in Indian military history.

Chief of Army Staff has instituted Lt Gen Prem Bhagat Chair of Excellence (COE) to commemorate the visionary leader. He was one of the few leaders who was awarded the highest pre independence gallantry award ‘Victoria Cross’ and was the first Bombay Sappers to reach the exalted rank of Lieutenant General.  

The first COE on the topic “ Legacy of Lt Gen PS Bhagat: A Visionary and Strategic Leader” was awarded to Maj Gen SG Pitre (Retd).
