The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee Chair of Excelence


Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee OBE was an Indian military officer who was the first Commander in Chief (C-in-C) of the Indian Air Force.  He has also been called the Father of the Indian Air Force.  In the year 1995 the USI Centre for Research (USICR) and the Air Headquarters decided to establish a Chair in the name of Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee. The Chair commenced in 1997 and the first Chair was allotted to Air Marshal Vir Narain, PVSM (Retd), who researched on the topic “Sustainable Defence: Harmonising Long and Short-Term Goals”.In the year 1995 the USI Centre for Research (USICR) and the Air Headquarters decided to establish a Chair in the name of Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee.

Air Marshal Diptendu Choudhury PVSM, AVSM, VM, VSM (Retd)

A former Commandant of the National Defence College with over 5000 operational sorties on fighters, and extensive experience in air and joint operations at strategic, operational and tactical levels. Experienced in policy formulation, doctrine and strategy development, he has led three international exercises and been a member of two defence talks. An alumnus of the Royal College of Defence Studies UK, a MA in Strategy and International Security from King’s College, London, an M Phil in Defence and Strategic Studies, and a PhD in airpower. He is a distinguished fellow of VIF and CAPS, and an avid scholar, writer and speaker on strategy, airpower and national security.
