The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), Japan

USI hosted a delegation from the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), Japan for a focused strategic interaction on 09 December 2025. The visit aimed to strengthen the India–Japan defence dialogue and enhance institutional cooperation on strategic and security issues.

The programme featured two key sessions:

  1.  USI Presentation: Strategic relations involving the US, China, Russia, and India, followed by an engaging Q&A.
  2.  NIDS Presentation: India–Japan foreign and security policies, defence cooperation, and the role of the Quad in the Indo-Pacific.

Maj Gen Goswami delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the engagement.
Major General BK Sharma, AVSM, SM (Retd), Director General, USI, delivered the opening and closing remarks, emphasising shared strategic interests and the importance of collaborative research between the two institutions.

The visit concluded with an exchange of mementos and informal discussions over refreshments.

This interaction further deepens the longstanding partnership between India and Japan and highlights the commitment of both institutions to fostering meaningful strategic dialogue.
