The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Timeless Military Paintings by Lt Col Arul Raj

The United Service Institution of India (USI) hosted the unveiling ceremony of the Coffee Table Book titled “Timeless Military Paintings by Lt Col Arul Raj”, authored by Maj Gen Ian Cardozo, AVSM, SM (Retd). The event took place on 22 October 2025 at the Major General Samir Sinha Auditorium, USI. The Coffee Table Book was unveiled by General Anil Chauhan, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, Chief of DefenceStaff, in the presence of General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, Chief of Army Staff; Maj Gen B.K. Sharma, AVSM, SM**, Director General, USI; Maj Gen Ian Cardozo, AVSM, SM (Retd); Lt Col Arul Raj (Retd); and Sqn Ldr Rana Chhina, MBE (Retd).

The ceremony commenced with the welcoming of guests on the dais, followed by an address by the author, Maj Gen Ian Cardozo, who shared his reflections on the artistic and historical significance of the collection. Lt Col Arul Raj, the artist, then addressed the gathering, offering insights into his creative journey and the inspiration behind his military-themed artwork.

The keynote address was delivered by the Chief Guest, General Anil Chauhan, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, Chief of Defence Staff, who commended the artistic tribute to India’s military heritage and highlighted the role of art in preserving the valour and legacy of the Armed Forces. The Coffee Table Book was formally unveiled in collaboration with the publisher’s representative, Ms. Neha A. Chowdhary from DK Publishers.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Director, CMCHS, and Editor of the book, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, attendees, and collaborators.
