The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

(USI-MUN 2025)

Event Highlights

USI-MUN 2025, was hosted by the Centre for United Nations Studies (CUNS), the United Service institution of India (USI), from 26–27 April 2025. This prestigious Model United Nations event was organized in collaboration with the Centre for Cyber Excellence (CCOE), CyberPeace Foundation, and the Indian Space Association (ISpA). ECB Sustainable Youth Foundation with TIES, as a strategic partner, assisted USI in curating the event. Student delegates from across Delhi NCR, actively participated in five simulated UN committees within the UN frame work.

 

Inaugural Session Highlights:

  • Welcome Address by Maj Gen PK Goswami, Director, CUNS
  • Special Video Message from Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General, Department of Peace Operations, UN
  • Keynote Address by Amb. Asoke Mukerji, Former Permanent Representative of India to the UN
  • Event Overview and Partner Acknowledgement by Dr. Daniel J, Senior Advisor, CUNS

 

Committee Simulations:

Each committee addressed critical global issues through research-based discussions, debates, and resolutions:

  • UN Security Council (UNSC): Focused on reforming the UNSC and emphasizing India’s role in global peacekeeping.
  • UN General Assembly (UNGA): Explored multilateral efforts in post-conflict reconstruction, including institutional rebuilding and development.
  • UN Environment Programme (UNEP): Deliberated on international cooperation for environmental protection, climate policy, and sustainability.
  • UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC): Addressed challenges faced by refugees and migrants, focusing on rights-based and humanitarian solutions.
  • International Press Corps (IPC): Provided comprehensive coverage through daily reporting, photography, interviews, and a final video presentation.

 

Panel Discussion – "Empowering Future Global Leaders"

An insightful panel discussion brought together diverse experts to explore the role of UN studies in shaping interdisciplinary careers:

  • Speakers included:
    • Amb. Y.K. Sinha, Former High Commissioner of India to the UK
    • Lt Gen A.K. Bhatt, Director General, Indian Space Association
    • Maj Gen PK Goswami, Director, CUNS
    • Col. Harkamal Sidhu, CyberPeace Foundation
  • Topics ranged from diplomacy and leadership to cybersecurity, space governance, and youth empowerment.
  • The session was moderated by Prof. (Dr) Rina Kashyap, offering both academic and practical perspectives.

 

Closing Ceremony

  • Valedictory Address: Amb. Y.K. Sinha, emphasizing India’s growing role in global diplomacy.
  • Special Address: Lt Gen A.K. Bhatt, highlighting the relevance of STEM fields and UNOOSA (United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs).
  • Awards and Recognitions:
    • 25 delegates were recognized for exceptional performance.
    • Best Institution Award: Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan, N Delhi.

    • Runner-Up: Gitarattan Global School, Rohini, N Delhi.

 

Conclusion

USI-MUN 2025 went beyond traditional MUN simulation and provided students with a transformative experience in diplomacy, strategic thinking, and global problem-solving. The event reaffirmed the importance of empowering youth as future leaders in international affairs.
