The Determinants of Indias National Military Strategy

About the Monograph

This monograph offers a comprehensive and analytically rigorous examination of the political, geographical, and military factors that shape India’s national military strategy. Beginning with an assessment of India’s changing strategic geography and the volatile Indo-Pacific environment, it outlines how China’s assertiveness, Pakistan’s perpetual hostility, and the expanding grey-zone contest are redefining India’s threat matrix. It then explores the role of strategic culture, the civil–military interface, and the challenges of formulating coherent long-term security objectives in the absence of an articulated national security strategy. The work highlights how technological disruptions—from precision missiles to information warfare—are transforming future warfighting and necessitating integrated, whole-of-nation responses. Drawing on historical insight and contemporary realities, the monograph provides a conceptual foundation for developing a resilient, forward-looking national military strategy suited to India’s geopolitical aspirations.
