5th Gen KV Krishna Rao Memorial Lecture: India's Strategic Autonomy: Opportunities and Challenges in the World Emerging Order

About the Monograph

This monograph examines India’s pursuit of strategic autonomy in a rapidly evolving global order marked by geopolitical competition, technological disruption and regional instability. The speakers emphasise that India’s shift from non-alignment to strategic autonomy reflects a more proactive, interest-driven approach supported by economic strength, credible military capabilities and diversified partnerships. Key arguments highlight the erosion of the post-WWII multilateral system, the rise of China, and the pressures shaping India’s strategic choices. The lectures underscore that autonomy requires robust deterrence, resilient institutions, self-reliance through Atmanirbharta, and agility in managing ties with major powers without compromising national interests. They also stress the importance of political stability, internal cohesion and comprehensive national power for sustaining independent decision-making. India’s strategic path ahead must balance securing national interests, enhancing self-reliance, and shaping a favourable external environment amid complex regional and global dynamics.
