The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Abhay Tripathi Chair of Excellence


Abhay Tripathi (1961–2021) was an esteemed Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1986 batch, belonging to the Andhra Pradesh cadre. He served in various key capacities within the Andhra Pradesh state government. He was deeply involved in implementation of Value Added Tax regime in the country. He was appointed as Senior Directing Staff at the National Defence College under the Ministry of Defence, a position that was elevated from Joint Secretary to Additional Secretary level in 2016. In 2019, He took on the role of Principal Resident Commissioner at Andhra Pradesh Bhavan in New Delhi.
