The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Professor Daulat Singh Kothari DRDO Chair


 

 


Dr. D S Kothari (Padma Bushan & Padma Vibhushan), then Scientific Advisor to Ministry of Defence, Government of India is an outstanding physicist, educationalist and considered as the ‘Architect of Defence Science’ in India.  He was also the founder of most of the DRDO labs in India.

In his honour DRDO decided to sponsor a fellowship in the name of Prof DS Kothari Chair which commenced in the year 1998. The first Chair was allotted to Rear Adm KR Menon (Retd), who researched on the subject “A Nuclear Strategy for India”.
