  • 25 Apr 2017. - A workshop titled ‘Flag Officers Leadership and Management Enterprise (FLAME-17)’ was organised by the IHQ MoD (Navy) from 17-27 April. USI organised a capsule on ‘The Reach, Impact and Potential of Media and Social Media on National Security’ on 25 Apr 2017 from 0915- 1200 hours for 12 Flag Officers. Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director USI chaired the event which was followed by presentations by Dr Sanjaya Baru and Lt Gen VK Narula (Retd), former DG, Artillery and former ADG PI.
  • 21 Mar 2017. - Dr Sanjaya Baru, former Media Advisor to the Prime Minister of India delivered a talk on “Comparing the Economies of China and India and its Impact on India's Strategic and Security Interests”. The talk was chaired by Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director USI.
  • 17 Mar 2017. - A four member delegation of the Secretary General of the Secretariat of Egyptian National Defence Councils led by General Ibrahim Osman Mossa, Deputy of General Secretary of the National Defence Council (Rank of Ministers) visited USI from 1030-1230 hours.
  • 17 Mar 2017. - A 32 member delegation from the French Institute for Higher Defence Studies (IHEDN) visited USI from 1415-1630 hours. Maj Gen BK Sharma, AVSM, SM** (Retd), Deputy Director (Research) gave a presentation on “Geo-Politics of Combating Terrorism in the Af-Pak Region” with Lt Gen PC Katoch, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SC (Retd) as a co-panellist. The presentation was followed by an interactive session.
  • 16 Mar 2017. - A discussion was organised by the USI on the book “Mission Overseas : Daring Operations by the Indian Military” authored by Shri Sushant Singh at 1100 hours. The event was attended by the USI members and serving officers from the Armed Forces.
  • 09 Feb 2017. - Maj Gen BK Sharma, AVSM, SM** (Retd), Deputy Director (Research) and Head of Centre for Strategic Studies and Simulation (CS3), USI presented a paper on ‘Building Collaboration to Combat Trans-National Terrorism in the Af-Pak Region’ at the International Seminar on Terrorism organised by the National Security Guard (NSG) at Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi.
  • 30-31 Jan 2017. - Maj Gen BK Sharma, AVSM, SM** (Retd), Deputy Director (Research) and Head of Centre for Strategic Studies and Simulation (CS3), USI presented a paper on ‘Pakistan-China Strategic Nexus and Implications for India’ at HQ 6, Mtn Div
  • 31 Jan 2017. - A delegation of six officers from friendly countries (Iran, Nigeria, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) attending HDMC Course Serial-12, led by Col DS Bajaj from College of Defence Management, Secunderabad, visited USI from 1145-1315 hours. Lt Gen Chander Prakash, SM, VSM (Retd), Deputy Director and Editor briefed the delegation about various aspects of functioning and organisation of USI and Shri RS Kalha, IFS (Retd) delivered a talk on “Geopolitical Developments and Impact on India’s Security” followed by an interactive session

  • 18-19 Jan 2017. - Cdr MH Rajesh, Research Fellow at CS3, USI delivered a talk on ‘China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)’ at Flag Officer Doctrine and Concepts (FODC), Mumbai.
  • 20 Dec 2016. - General John W Nicholson, Commander Resolute Support and United States Forces-Afghanistan delivered a talk on “2016 Campaign in Afghanistan : A Way Forward” at USI on 20 Dec 2016 with Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director USI in the Chair
  • 19 Dec 2016. - It gives us great happiness to share with our members that Squadron Leader Rana TS Chhina (Retd), Secretary, CAFHR has been made an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by the British Government, after prior approval of the Indian Government, a rare honour, in recognition of his services and contribution to Indo-UK relations and for work on the Great War (1914-18) Centenary Commemoration. His Investiture Ceremony was held at the British High Commissioner’s Residence on 19 Dec 2016.
  • 25 Nov 2016. - Round Table Discussion was held with a Taiwanese delegation comprising Dr Shen Ming-Shih, PhD, Director, Department of Strategic Studies, National Defence University and Colonel Chen Yung-Chen, Republic of China Air Force, Director at Strategy Analysis Section War College, National Defence University accompanied by Mr Chihlung Sheng, Director Liaison Affairs Section, Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India from 1100-1300 hrs.
  • 22 Nov 2016. - A book titled “Les Hindous: Indian Army on the Western Front: 1914- 1919” authored by Squadron Leader Rana TS Chhina, OBE (Retd), Secretary USI-CAFHR was launched jointly by the French and Belgian Ambassadors at the Embassy of France. The book launch was followed by a reception hosted by the French Embassy.
  • 16 Nov 2016. - Round Table Discussion was held with a five member UK Staff Team accompanying Permanent Secretary for Defence on visit to India from 1430-1630 hrs. Discussion centred around Mutual Indo-UK Interests, Brexit and British Interest in the Indian Ocean. Ambassador Ajai Malhotra, IFS (Retd) chaired the discussion.
  • 02 Nov 2016. - A four member delegation from Institute for Defence International Relations, Vietnam, headed by Maj Gen Vu Tien Trong and accompanied by HE Ton Sinh Thanh, Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Senior Col Nguyen Quang Chien, Vietnamese DA in New Delhi, visited USI for bilateral discussions and exchanged views on Indo-Vietnam relations and situation in South China Sea from 1000 h-1300 h.
  • 03 Aug 2016. - A 19 member delegation led by Captain (Sri Lankan Navy) MDK Wijewardana from the Sri Lankan Defence Services Command and Staff College accompanied by Sri Lanka’s Defence Advisor, Captain (Sri Lankan Navy) WHUP Hewage visited the USI from 1215-1315 hrs as part of their study tour to India. They were given a presentation on “A Perspective on Indian Ocean Region” by Cdr MH Rajesh, Senior Research Fellow at USI.
  • 07 Jun 2016. - Round table discussion with a six member delegation from the Sichuan University, Chengdu, China led by Prof Yang Minghong was held at USI from 1030-1630 hours. The topics discussed were : Development in Tibet and its Impact on Sino-Indian Relations and Sino-Pak Relations and its Impact on Sino-Indian Relations. The two sessions were Chaired by Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director USI and Shri Vivek Katju, IFS (Retd), respectively.
  • 01 Jun 2016. - A delegation from the Royal Military Education College of the Kingdom of Morocco, comprising 54 officers from 15 countries, led by General de Brigade Omar El Ouadoudi visited USI from 1100 – 1230 hours on Wednesday, 01 Jun 2016. The delegation was addressed by Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director USI and a presentation on “Information Communication Technology : Key to Transformation in India” was given by Lt Gen Davinder Kumar, PVSM, VSM and Bar (Retd), former Signal Officer-in-Chief.
  • 23 May 2016. - A Round Table Discussion with Mr Yoshiya Muto, Deputy Director General, Defence Intelligence HQ (DIH), Japan accompanied by a delegation of seven members from DIH and Embassy of Japan was held on “Developments in South China Sea and Indo-Pacific Region” from 1215 to 1315 hours. The event was Chaired by Maj Gen PJS Sandhu (Retd), Officiating Director and attended by scholars and some members of USI.
  • 11 May 2016 - A delegation from Nigerian NDC Course -24 comprising 15 officers led by Air Commodore Adedokun visited USI from 1500 – 1630 hours on Wednesday, 11 May 2016.
  • 13 Apr 2016 - A Round Table Discussion on “International Humanitarian Law and Challenges of Terrorism” with Dr Knut Dörmann, Head of the Legal Division and Chief Legal Officer, ICRC accompanied by Ms Mary Werntz, Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation in New Delhi and eight other representatives from ICRC was held from 1130-1300 hours.
  • 22 Mar 2016 - Colonel Wiito L Nzidee, FSS, Deputy Defence Advisor, Nigeria High Commission visited USI and held discussion with Maj Gen PJS Sandhu (Retd), Deputy Director and Editor and Maj Gen BK Sharma, AVSM, SM** (Retd), Deputy Director (Research) from 1000-1100 hours, regarding the visit of Nigerian NDC Course-24 to India from 08-14 May 2016 and the delegation from National Institute for Policy for Strategic Studies (NIPSS) from 23 May-03 Jun 2016.
  • 11 Mar 2016 - As part of the 1971 Indo-Pak War Golden Jubilee Commemoration Project, the USI has collaborated with Mr Pradip Chopra, Chairman iLEAD (Institute of Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Development), Kolkata, to produce an audio-visual documentary of the role of the Indian Armed Forces in the conflict. A trial screening of the documentary was held at the USI at 1100 hrs. A select audience of veterans was invited to view the film and offer their comments to the film maker.
  • 08 Mar 2016. A round table discussion (RTD) on “Japan-India Relationship” was held with Dr Lavina Lee, Faculty of Modern Arts, Department of Modern History, Politics and International Relations, Macquarie University, Australia from 1230-1330 hours. The RTD was Chaired by Maj Gen PJS Sandhu (Retd), Officiating Director USI and attended by Research scholars of USI.
  • 23 Feb 2016.A round table discussion (RTD) on “Nuclear Dynamics in South Asia” was held with Dr Priyanjali Malik, an independent researcher and Dr Rajiv Nayan, Senior Research Associate, IDSA from 1100-1300 hours. The RTD was Chaired by Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director USI and attended by members of USI, serving Armed Forces officers and Research scholars.
  • 18 Feb 2016. A round table discussion (RTD) was held with Mr Philip Dunne, MP, Minister of State for Defence Procurement, the United Kingdom on “India and the UK – The Strategic Defence Partnership” from 1430-1600 hours. He was accompanied by Dr Alexander Evans, Acting British High Commissioner and Brig Mark Goldsack, CBE, Defence Adviser. The RTD was Chaired by Lt Gen Vinay Shankar, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd) and attended by members of USI, serving Armed Forces officers and Research scholars.
  • 03 Feb 2016.A Round Table Discussion (RTD) was held with Vice Admiral Ben Key, CBE, Royal Navy Fleet Commander and Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, the United Kingdom from 1030 - 1230 hours. He was accompanied by Lt Commander Nick Bates, Capt Stuart Borland (Naval Adviser) and Brig Mark Goldsack, CBE (Defence Adviser). The Vice Admiral made his remarks on ‘UK’s Strategic Defence and Security Review’ which was followed by an interactive session. The RTD was Chaired by Vice Admiral AK Singh, PVSM, AVSM, NM (Retd) and attended by serving military officers, diplomats and USI scholars.
  • 01 Feb 2016. As part of the outstation instructional visit, a 14 member team of student officers from Department of Technology Management, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune visited USI from 1430 to 1645 hours. The team interacted with Maj Gen PK Goswami, VSM (Retd), Deputy Director (Administration), Mr RS Kalha, IFS (Retd) and Cmde Lalit Kapur (Retd)on Make in India in Defence Sector, India’s Maritime Strategy and Sino-Indian Relations.
  • 20 Jan 2016.USI hosted a delegation comprising 20 students and 05 faculty members from Tsinghua University, Beijing, presently undergoing a course in OP Jindal Global University, Sonepat. The delegation interacted with Director USI and other staff about the current state of Sino-India relations and key challenges ahead from 1530-1700 h.
  • 14 Jan 2016. Nigerian Defence Adviser, Capt (NN) Ayo Olugbode visited USI at 1500 h and held discussion with DDE, DD (R) and DD (Adm) to finalise the modalities for the impending visit of Nigerian Army delegation from 25-29 Jan 2016.
  • 16 Dec 2015.Ambassador Roger Meece, former US Ambassador to Malawi and DRC and later SRSG to DRC and Head of MONUSCO visited USI and held discussions with the Director and a few other members on India’s growing regional and world power role and how it may develop; the changing dynamics of the South China Sea; and future challenges to UN Peacekeeping Operations.
  • 15 Dec 2015. A strategic discussion was held at USI for young diplomats from some of the ASEAN countries undergoing a month long training at the Foreign Service Institute, New Delhi from 1500-1730 hours. The discussion covered South East Asia, West Asia and Af-Pak Region.
  • 09 Dec 2015.Dr Fu-Kuo Liu, Executive Director, Taiwan Centre for Security Studies, Institute of International Relations, National Chengchi University, Taiwan visited USI and held discussions with the Director from 1530-1700 hours.

  • 10 Sep 2015 -HE Shaida Mohammad Abdali, Ambassador of Afghanistan accompanied by Mr Said Hafizullah Maududi, Political Counsellor visited USI for a Round Table Discussion from 1100 to 1300 hours.
  • 10 Aug 2015 –USI and The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) conducted a workshop on nuclear issues from 1000-1430 h. The workshop was conducted in three sessions covering ‘Conceptualising a Multipolar Nuclear Order’, ‘Applying Multipolar Nuclear Concepts in Asia’ and ‘The Future of Stability in Asia’.
  • 05 Aug 2015 –A Round Table Discussion with Shri Shivshankar Menon, IFS (Retd), former Foreign Secretary and NSA on ‘India’s Relations with the USA, China and Pakistan, and Nuclear Issues’ was held from 1100-1300 h.
  • 03 Aug 2015 –A Round Table Discussion with a delegation from the Sichuan University, Chengdu, China comprising Dr Yang Minghong, Executive Director and Dr Huang Yunsong, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Social Development and Western China Development Studies was held from 1030-1330 h. Two presentations each were given by the Chinese and the Indian side.
  • 23 Jul 2015 –Col Mats Wigselius, the outgoing Defence Attaché of Sweden and Col Per Nilsson, incoming Defence Attaché of Sweden in India visited USI held discussions with Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director and Maj Gen PJS Sandhu (Retd), Deputy Director and Editor from 1100-1145 h.
  • 20 Jul 2015 –A Round Table Discussion with Mr Claude Arpi on “Future Scenarios for Tibet – What it Implies for India” and “China’s Ninth White Paper on Military Strategy” was held at USI from 1045 – 1300 h. The RTD was Chaired by Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director and attended by Armed Forces officers, diplomats, scholars and USI staff.
  • 13 Jul 2015 –Group Captain Benedict Smith, the outgoing French Defence Attaché in India and Colonel Frédéric UGO, incoming French Defence Attaché in India visited USI and held discussions with Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director and Maj Gen PJS Sandhu (Retd), Deputy Director and Editor from 1115 to 1230 h.
  • 07 Jul 2015 –Discussion with Lt Gen Abhijit Guha (Retd) on the report of “Review of Peace Operations” - a high level independent panel of the UN Secretary General headed by Mr Ramos Horta, of which he was one of the panellists, was held in USI from 1100-1300 h. The discussion was Chaired by Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director USI and attended by serving and retired officers of the Armed Forces and diplomats.
  • 01 Jul 2015 –Dr Anne F Thurston, Senior Research Professor of China Studies at the John Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) visited USI and held discussions on ‘Political Reforms in China and Tibet’ with the Director, Deputy Director and Editor and some members of USI from 1100-1330 h.
  • 30 Jun 2015 –Ms Sarah Kaiser-Cross, Asia Manager at Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) visited USI and held discussions with the Director and a few other staff members of the USI from 1430-1600 h.
  • 08 Jun 2015 – A 14 member delegation from National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Nigeria, led by Commodore (NN) MS Garba, mni visited USI from 1030 h to 1230 h. The delegation was briefed on 'Indian Armed Forces Contribution to National Human Capacity Development : Training and Infrastructure' by the Director USI and 'Transnational Terrorist Threat : Issues and Prospects' by Dr Adil Rashid, Senior Research Fellow at USI.
  • 05 Jun 2015 –Professor Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, OFR, Director General, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Nigeria accompanied by Captain (NN) Ayo Olugbode, MSS psc, Defence Adviser and Lieutenant Colonel Wiito L Nzidee, FSS psc, Deputy Defence Adviser, Nigeria High Commission visited USI and held discussions with the Director from 1615 to 1700 h.
  • 25 May 2015 – Mr Jeff M Smith, Director of South Asia Programmes and Kraemer Strategy Fellow at American Foreign Policy Council visited USI and held discussions with the Director USI and a few members on US-China, India-Us and India-China relations from 1030 to 1200 h.
  • 12 May 2015 – A 34 member delegation from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Command and Staff College Course led by Lt Col Mohamad Sallehin bin Mohamad Taib visited USI from 1030-1230 h. Presentations were given by Ambassador RS Kalha on "Retracing India-China Disputes" and Lt Gen KK Khanna, PVSM, AVSM and Bar (Retd) on "A Strategic and Operational Analysis of the Indo-Pak War of 1971". The discussion was Chaired by Maj Gen PJS Sandhu (Retd), Officiating Director, USI.

  • 23 Apr 2015 – A Round Table Discussion with Mr Eliot A Cohen, Director, Philip Merrill Cenre for Strategic Studies at John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies was Held from 1100-1300 h.
  • 08-09 Apr 2015 – A joint MEA-USI-Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (New York) workshop on ‘Responsibility to Protect (R2P)’ was hosted by USI. Panel discussions were held on “R2P and Civilian Protection : Challenges and Opportunities”, “Peacekeeping, Protection of Civilians and R2P”, “IBSA : R2P and Global Responsibilty” and “Way Forward”.
  • 17 Mar 2015 – Major General Muniruzzaman (Retd), Founder President of Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS), Dhaka visited USI from 1315-1500 h and held discussion on current and evolving situation in Bangladesh with the Director and other invitees.

  • 10 Feb 2015 – A Round Table Discussion (RTD) with Ms Leena Noronen and Mr Tomi Mertanen, researchers from Finnish Defence Forces accompanied by Ms Seija Kinni, Minister Counsellor, Embassy of Finland, New Delhi on 'India-Russia and India-China Relations' was held from 1030-1200 h. The RTD was Chaired by Major General PJS Sandhu (Retd), Deputy Director and Editor, USI and attended by the faculty and all the research scholars at USI.

  • 13 Jan 2015 – A Round Table Discussion with Mr Yves Daccord, Director General ICRC on “New Technologies and Means of Warfare – Humanitarian and Legal Challenges” was held at USI from 1200 – 1345 h. The discussion was Chaired by Shri Ranjit S Kalha, IFS (Retd).
  • 17 Dec 2014 – A delegation from Indonesian Defence University consisting of six members, led by Air Vice Marshal Suparman Djapri, Vice Rector III of the University accompanied by Colonel (Navy) Arif Harnanto, the Defence Attaché in India visited USI from 1445 – 1600 h and held discussions with Director, Deputy Director (Research) and other members of USI staff.
  • 17 Dec 2014 – Higher Defence Management Course – Serial 10 comprising three faculty members and 23 course members visited USI from 1000 – 1400 h. A panel discussion was held in which brief presentations on India’s Strategic Perspective were made by the panellists which were followed by an interactive session. Squadron Leader Rana TS Chhina, Secretary USI-CAFHR gave a brief presentation on ‘India and the Great War’ Centenary Commemoration Project.
  • 27 Nov 2014 –Mr Yves Heller, Coordinator, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Geneva accompanied by Col Can Akdogan, PhD (Retd), Regional Delegate to the Armed and Security Forces, Brig MB Anand (Retd)and Col Pradeep Dhaul (Retd) of the ICRC visited USI from 1045-1200 hr and held discussion with the Director and Deputy Director and Editor, USI.
  • 20 Nov 2014 –Ambassador Mien-Sheng Hsu, President, Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs, Taipei accompanied by Mr Wei-Chung Chang, Division Director at the Institute and Ms Frances Chung Fee Lee, Deputy Representative,Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre, New Delhi called on Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director, USI.
  • 11 Nov 2014 –USI in collaboration with International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), London organised a Second Workshop on “Defence, Deterrence & Stability in Southern Asia” on 11 November 2014 from 1000 hr – 1630 hr.

  • 08 Aug 2014 – Air Commodore Shaun Clarke, New Zealand's Defence Advisor to Australia with accreditation to India visited USI at 1100 h on Friday, 08 Aug 2014 and held discussions with Lt Gen PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director and other members of the staff. The cooperation between New Zealand and India for the project 'India and the Great War 1914-18' was also discussed.

  • 10 August 2011 – A Memorandum of Understanding regarding bilateral cooperation between Korea Research Institute for Military Affairs (KRIMA) and USI of India. The MoU was signed by Mr Kim Jim Woog, President KRIMA and Lieutenant General PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), Director USI on behalf of respective institutions at USI of India.
